Mikhail Pletnev is a towering figure in the world of classical music, renowned as a pianist, conductor and composer whose interpretive depth and technical mastery have left an indelible mark. Rising to prominence after winning the Tchaikovsky International Piano Competition in 1978 at age 21, Pletnev’s career has been defined by his ability to balance virtuosic precision with profound musical insight.

Revealing a rare sensitivity to the emotional and structural complexities of the music, Pletnev possesses an extraordinary technical mastery that allows him to navigate complex works with precision and ease while often revealing new layers of meaning. He is joined at the 28th BMF by Tianxu An, whose electrifying virtuosity and profound musicality make him the perfect partner.

Mikhail Pletnev is an artist whose genius as pianist, conductor and composer enchants and amazes audiences around the globe. His musicianship encompasses a dazzling technical power and provocative emotional range, and a searching interpretation that fuses instinct with intellect.

At the keyboard and podium alike, Pletnev is recognized as one of the finest artists of our time. Pletnev was Gold Medal and First Prize winner of the 1978 Tchaikovsky International Piano Competition when he was only 21, a prize that earned him early recognition worldwide. An invitation to perform at the 1988 superpower summit in Washington led to a friendship with Mikhail Gorbachev and the historic opportunity to make music in artistic freedom.

In 1990 Pletnev formed the first independent orchestra in Russia's history. The risks of this step, even with Gorbachev's endorsement, were enormous and it was Pletnev's reputation and commitment that made his long-held dream a reality. Sharing his vision for a new model for the performing arts, many of the country's finest musicians joined Pletnev in launching the Russian National Orchestra. Under his leadership, the RNO achieved in a few short years a towering stature among the world's orchestras. Pletnev describes the RNO as his greatest joy and today serves as its Artistic Director and Principal Conductor. In 2006, he launched the Mikhail Pletnev Fund for the Support of National Culture, a non-profit organization that supports major cultural initiatives and projects, including the RNO's annual Volga Tour and, in collaboration with Deutsche Grammophon, the Mikhail Pletnev Beethoven Project.

As a solo pianist and recitalist, Pletnev appears regularly in the world's music capitals. His recordings and live performances have proved him to be an outstanding interpreter of an extensive repertoire. The London Telegraph remarked, "from Pletnev's fingers and brain come ideas that vitalise the music and make it teem with freshness and wit. [He] made the music positively leap for joy." The Times describes his playing as "born of a prodigious virtuosity of imagination outrageous in its beauty."

Pletnev’s recordings have earned numerous prizes, including a 2005 Grammy Award for the CD of his own arrangement, for two pianos, of Prokofiev’s Cinderella, recorded with Martha Argerich and Pletnev at the keyboards. He received Grammy nominations for a CD of Schumann Symphonic Etudes (2004) and for his recording of Rachmaninov and Prokofiev Piano Concertos No. 3 with the RNO and conductor Mstislav Rostropovich (2003). His album of Scarlatti’s Keyboard Sonatas (Virgin/EMI) received a Gramophone Award in 1996. BBC Music Magazine called the recording "piano playing at its greatest... this performance alone would be enough to secure Pletnev a place among the greatest pianists ever known." In 2007 he recorded all of Beethoven's piano concertos with Deutsche Grammophon, and the recording of concertos 2 and 4 was named "The Best Concerto Recording of 2007" by the Tokyo Record Academy.

As a composer, Pletnev's works include Classical Symphony, Triptych for Symphony Orchestra, Fantasy on Kazakh Themes and Capriccio for Piano and Orchestra. His unrivalled transcriptions for piano of Tchaikovsky's Nutcracker Suite and Sleeping Beauty were selected, along with his performance of Tchaikovsky's Second Piano Concerto and The Seasons, for the 1998 anthology "Great Pianists of the 20th Century" (Philips Classics).

The son of musician parents, Pletnev was conducting and learning multiple instruments as a young child and entered the Moscow Conservatory as a teenager. Today he is one of Russia's most respected and influential artists. An advisor on Russia’s Cultural Council, in 2007 Pletnev was awarded a Presidential Prize for his contributions to the artistic life of the country. Pianist, conductor, composer and cultural leader -- all are significant facets of Mikhail Pletnev's life as an artist. Yet he considers himself, simply, a musician.

Swiss Fantasies and Russian Memories

While Mikhail Pletnev is a virtuoso pianist of breathtaking artistry and a masterful conductor leading world-class ensembles, he is also an accomplished composer. He has over 30 orchestral and chamber works, alongside some celebrated piano transcriptions to his name, and his Fantasia Helvetica (Swiss Fantasy) was written in 2006 as a tribute to his adopted home in Lucerne. Scored for two pianos and orchestra, this captivating neoclassical gem masterfully blends sophisticated artistry with playful entertainment. Beneath its elegant framework, the composition sparkles with subtle nods to Swiss folk traditions, including evocative cowbells, spirited fanfares, lively musette polkas, and delicate hints of a Swiss Psalm. Kirill Karabits has been Chief Conductor of the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra for 15 years, and their relationship is celebrated worldwide. Together, they have made many critically acclaimed recordings, performed regularly at the BBC Proms, celebrated the re-opening of Bristol Beacon, appeared together at London’s Barbican Centre as part of the Beethoven celebrations and at Southbank Centre for Kirill’s bold programming brand Voices from the East. Karabits is also an advocate for music education, often engaging in outreach activities to bring classical music to younger audiences. In 2024 Karabits was awarded The Order of British Empire (OBE) for his services to classical music in the UK. A prolific opera conductor, Kirill has worked with the Deutsche Oper (Don Giovanni), Opernhaus Zürich (Boris Godunov, La Bohème), Oper Stuttgart (Death in Venice), Glyndebourne Festival Opera (La Bohème, Eugene Onegin), Staatsoper Hamburg (Madama Butterfly), English National Opera (Don Giovanni), Oslo, Zurich and Geneva Opera, the Grange Festival (Così fan tutte), Glyndebourne and Bregenz festivals, and conducted a performance of Der fliegende Holländer at the Wagner Geneva Festival in celebration of the composer’s anniversary. His ability to bring out fresh perspectives in familiar works has made him a sought-after conductor.

Music Director of the Deutsches Nationaltheatre Weimar from 2016-19, Karabits conducted acclaimed productions of Wagner's Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg and Tannhäuser as well as Mozart's DaPonte Cycle (Le nozze di Figaro, Don Giovanni, and Così fan tutte).

Highlights of the 2024/25 season include Kirill’s debut performances with the Orchestre de Paris and SWR Symphonieorchester Stuttgart, return visits to Orchestra Sinfonica Nazionale RAI, Belgrade Philharmonic, Warsaw Philharmonic, Norwegian Radio Orchestra, City of Birmingham Symphony, and the Norwegian Opera for a new production of Stravinsky’s The Rakes Progress Opera. He also embarks on a major South African Tour with the Mzansi National Philharmonic. In his title of Conductor Emeritus, Kirill returns to Bournemouth Symphony for a dazzling Voices-from-the-East-inspired programme.

Recent highlights include Kirill’s return to the Theater an der Wien for a new production of Gounod’s Roméo et Juliette, to Opernhaus Zürich for La Boheme, to The Grange Festival for Così fan tutte, and to the Weimar Staatskapelle conducting the Hungarian premiere of Liszt’s Sardanapalo opera. Last season saw Kirill perform with the Dallas Symphony, Orchestre Philharmonique du Luxembourg, Orchestre Philharmonique de Monte-Carlo, and embark on an extensive Korean Tour conducting the Chamber Orchestra of Europe alongside pianist Sunwook Kim. Kirill has also enjoyed conducting at the Edinburgh Festival and joining Mikhail Pletnev on extensive European and North American tours which included his New York debut at the Lincoln Center.

Working with the next generation of bright musicians is of great importance to Kirill, and as Artistic Director of I, CULTURE Orchestra he conducted them on their European tour in August 2015 with Lisa Batiashvili as soloist and a summer Festivals’ tour in 2018, including concerts at the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam and the Montpellier Festival. In 2012 and 2014 he conducted the televised finals of the BBC Young Musician of the Year Award (working with the Royal Northern Sinfonia and BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra), and has collaborated with the National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain on a UK tour, including a critically acclaimed performance at the Barbican.

Kirill Karabits was born in 1976 in Kyiv. He is the son of composer Ivan Karabits and grew up surrounded by music. He studied conducting at the Lysenko Music School in Kyiv and later at the Vienna University of Music and Performing Arts. His early career saw him working with major orchestras across Europe such as the Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France, Strasbourg Philharmonic, Staatskapelle Weimar, Budapest Festival Orchestra among others. He is internationally known for his dynamic interpretations and innovative programming. Karabits has served as the Chief Conductor of the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra (BSO) since 2009, a role in which he has brought the orchestra critical acclaim. Under his leadership, the BSO has expanded its repertoire, particularly championing Eastern European music.

Karabits has been involved in the rediscovery and first performances of lesser-known music from the Eastern Europe as well as Soviet-era composers. His repertoire ranges from classical staples to contemporary works, making him one of the most versatile conductors of his generation.

Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra and its Chief Conductor Kirill Karabits have received critical acclaim for bringing to life a series of forgotten orchestral masterpieces. In the late 20th-century the channel of distribution for contemporary classical music in eastern Europe changed dramatically. Karabits has made it his mission to source the orchestral gems that fell between the cracks and share this music with a wider audience.

Rachmaninoff International Orchestra (RIO)

Born of a singular moment in history, the Rachmaninoff International Orchestra (RIO) embodies the vision of its founder, Mikhail Pletnev, and his commitment to dismantling barriers through the universal language of music.

The name of the orchestra was inspired by composer, pianist, and conductor Sergei Rachmaninoff, an artist who loved his country but left and did not return due to the political forces in his homeland. Like Rachmaninoff, the RIO is dedicated to the highest standards of performance and artistic expression.

Composed of preeminent musicians from Eastern and Western Europe, the RIO’s recordings and performances draw from the wide breadth of classical repertoire, with a focus on the Romantic and modern composers whose works have been the hallmark of Mikhail Pletnev’s celebrated interpretations.

In the summer of the orchestra's founding year 2022, the musicians of the RIO made their debut recording under Mikhail Pletnev’s baton –the suite from Swan Lake by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky and Carmen Suite by Rodion Shchedrin. The recording was released on SA-CD on the EuroArts label.

In October 2023 the orchestra recorded the four piano concertos and the Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini by Sergei Rachmaninoff in celebration of his 150th birthday – live in two concerts at Le Rosey Concert Hall in the Swiss town of Rolle, with Mikhail Pletnev at the keyboard and Kent Nagano conducting. Both performances were recorded for broadcast on Medici.tv and released by EuroArts on SA-CD and Blu-ray.

In 2023 the RIO also recorded works by Hartmann, Ravel and Sadikova conducted by Kent Nagano, who enjoys a close collaboration with the orchestra.

In November 2024, the RIO under the baton of Massimo Quarta kicked off the 800th anniversary celebrations of the Cathedral of Santa Maria in Toledo, Spain, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, with a concert featuring works by Bach and Pergolesi.

In January 2025, the orchestra and Mikhail Pletnev recorded Pletnev's Trumpet Concerto (soloist: Sergei Nakariakov) and his 14 Mémoires musicales as well as another album with works by Rachmaninoff and Pletnev, both for release by EuroArts.

Further recording projects are planned, and the RIO is scheduled to tour in Asia and Europe with Mikhail Pletnev and guest conductors.

Tianxu An is an outstanding young (born in 1999) Chinese pianist, much sought after both at home in China and around the world.

In June 2019, Mr. An drew international attention when won the fourth prize and a special prize for “courage and restraint” in the XVI International Tchaikovsky Competition, - the highest award at that famous competition for a Chinese pianist in 24 years. His performance was lauded by the jury chairman Denis Matsuev as “sensational” and “beyond his years of maturity.” In July 2019, following on from his win, he made his orchestral debut with the Philadelphia Orchestra at the Mann Center, performing Rachmaninoff Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini.

Highlights of his recent seasons included performances with the Mariinsky Orchestra under Valery Gergiev in St Petersburg, with the China Philharmonic Orchestra with Xiaotang Xia as part of the International Mariinsky Far East Festival, as well as solo recitals at the Mariinsky Theatre St Petersburg and Shanghai Grand Theater. He collaborated twice with Jia Lü, first with the NCPA (National Centre for the Performing Arts) Orchestra for his debut there on October, 2019, and later with the Macau Orchestra at the Grand Auditorium, Macao Cultural Centre in November 2020.

Mr. An has had major recital tours in China, with 19 cities in 2021 and a further 14 in summer 2022. In August 2022, he made his recital debut in Beijing National

Centre for the Performing Arts and at the Shanghai Oriental Arts Centre. In 2023/24 season, his highlights included performances with the China Philharmonic Orchestra, Guangzhou Symphony Orchestra, and Kunming Symphony Orchestra. His Vienna debut was with the Tonkünstler Orchestra of Austria in May 2024 at the prestigious Musikverein, performing Brahms' Piano Concerto No. 2. He was also invited to perform with the China National Symphony Orchestra at the concert celebrating the 75th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China and was received by President Xi Jinping.

His extraordinary performances have been reported by more than twenty famous newspaper in China. The Philadelphia Inquirer, one of the oldest newspapers in the U.S., has featured him twice. He was the New Artist of the Month for August 2021 in Musical America, the oldest classical music magazine in the U.S., and he was interviewed by the world-renowned piano specialization magazine, Pianist (UK).

In April 2022 his debut album "Tchaikovsky, Rachmaninoff, Prokofiev" was released worldwide by the French classical music label Alpha. Gramophone Magazine (UK) released a review of his debut solo CD, "He has an innate affinity with the three composers ", “the helter-skelter triplets of the ‘Scherzo-fantaisie’ from the 18 pieces of Op 72. I prefer Tianxu An’s more measured approach to Pletnev’s”; “Best of all is a top-drawer account of Rachmaninov’s Chopin Variations with some sparkling and colorful playing ". The French classical music magazine Classica commented that "with the release of this album, An Tianxu occupies a leading position in his field of expertise." On August 17, 2023, his second album, An Tianxu: Piano Recital in NCPA, was released worldwide by NCPA Classics on the NCPA Music Label, as part of the "Debut Series for Young Chinese Musicians".

He has participated in masterclasses with Klaus Bessler, Andrea Bonatta, Barry Douglas, Yefim Bronfman, and Emanuel Ax. In 2022, as one of four pianists selected worldwide, he participated in the Piano-Conducting Masterclass with Mikhail Pletnev under the auspices of the Géza Anda Foundation, Switzerland.

Mr. An completed his Bachelor’s Degree in 2022 at the Curtis Institute of Music, where he worked with Meng-Chieh Liu and also privately studied with Dang Thai Son. In the spring of 2024, he completed the Master of Music Program at the Juilliard School in New York, working with Robert McDonald. He previously studied with Hua Chang at the Middle School affiliated to the Central Conservatory of Music in Beijing. In 2024, An Tianxu joined the faculty of the Central Conservatory of Music, one of China's top music academies.
